We have launched our first article in our HR insights series! Our HR series aims to provide unique insights of working and becoming an HR professional in Ireland by getting advice from exceptional employers and organisations.

Our first HR insight article is with Paul Mooney, the current Managing Partner of Tandem Consulting.

Paul started his HR career in the pharmaceutical industry where he gained experience within Ireland and Asia. He then moved on to set up his own HR Consulting business supporting companies across 25 countries. Paul was the former President of the National College Ireland (NCI), has a PhD in Industrial Sociology from Trinity College and is the author of 14 books covering a wide span of issues and topics around organisation performance and personal change.

What attracted you to HR?

"I wanted to get a better understanding on how some organisations really get the best from people."

How did you progress your career?

"Firstly, I made sure to spend enough time in each specialist role, roughly about 4 years, in order to really learn how to do it. By studying the area I was working in it helped give me some wider context on what I was pursuing and helped build my confidence. Finally, I was open to moving locations as opportunities presented themselves which opened up a world of opportunity for me."

What is the most valuable piece of advice you have been given throughout your career?

"Make sure to learn how to ‘listen’ effectively (although I don’t always practice this!)."

What advice would you give to your 18-year-old self?

“Relax. You'll get there. Enjoy the journey"

Can you give us 1 fun fact about yourself?

"I like jokes - humour is a useful part of the toolkit."
