There are many misconceptions about the role of a recruitment consultant. Here at Walters People we do things differently and encourage a culture that allows our staff to grow and develop both in their personal life and career.

We speak to Dan Brown, senior manager for the Walters People part-qualified accounting and finance division, who shares insights into the typical day of a Walters People recruitment consultant and why working in recruitment is a fantastic career path.

A company culture suited to me

“My first job out of university was in internal recruitment for a travel company – which is where I discovered my knack and passion for the role as a recruiter.

It was a friend of mine who first mentioned the Walters People brand and my eyes lit up to the idea of working for a global business and the possible opportunities that came with it. One of the first things that jumped out to me about the company was the culture – entrepreneurial, forward-thinking, team-centric, fun and creative.

With a large company like this there is always the fear of procedures and processes, but in all honesty the autonomy and appetite for new ideas was so refreshing.

In such a fast-paced company and with so many opportunities available, it is not surprising how much my role has evolved since I first joined as an associate over five years ago. I’ve had the opportunity to work in a few different teams during my time here and am now a senior manager for both our contract and permanent divisions here in London.

What is reassuring is the fact that we have very clear progression plans and the transparency allows for open dialogue – whatever that may be, after all we all have different wants & needs from our career.

The variety alone keeps me engaged and challenged, but mostly I love seeing my teams flourish and my colleagues learn, improve and succeed – being a part of their success journey is so motivating for me.

It’s a people-focused company through-and-through from helping your team members internally, to providing advice and assistance to clients and candidates providing top quality end-to-end service.

A typical working day

We get breakfast provided daily – cereal and fruit – before we kick-off with our team plans for the day at 8.30am. This is where we run through any candidates that we are currently working with and any key areas that we are going to focus on – this is a great opportunity to information share and help teammates but also receive help from team mates to close deals.

Being based in Covent Garden we’re never short of food or leisure options for work. In all fairness, staying in the kitchen/break-out area for a game of darts or FIFA is always good fun – albeit competitive!

We typically wrap the day up at 17:30 – 18:00 to talk through what everyone has achieved and what needs to be followed up for the following day – again there is a real sense of togetherness where you can share what hurdles you have experienced that day and seek the team’s guidance.

We all try to get together weekly for some sort of team social, night out or company events – now those are both legendary and fun!

The strong team based culture is truly one of the main reasons I look forward to coming into work in the morning, after all, they say half the battle with any job is liking the people you work with.
